1. Esperanza Rising
Buy on AmazonEsperanza Rising is the saddest but best book I have ever read. The story begins in Mexico with Esperanza, a rich girl who has everything she could need, but her life turns upside down when her father dies. The town Mayor takes advantage of this and forces the mom to marry him. However, before the marriage Esperanza and her mom chose to run away with some of their servants to California. They are now broke so when they get to California they are servants. It is hard for Esperanza to transition from her rich life to her peasant life, and throughout the book she learns what it is like to work hard. I love this book because it makes you realize how good you have it, and times can always get worse. Also, the transition for Esperanza was written beautifully, and it shows actually how life is. I recommend this book for ages 10 and up.
